Tactics to Manage the ‘3Fs’

BarroMetrics Views: Tactics to Manage the ‘3Fs’

In  ‘Deliberative Practice II‘, I set out the strategic aims for managing the ‘3Fs’ – flight, fight, or freeze. Ryan wrote in and asked for a process of generating tactical actions that would achieve the strategic goals.

I’ll be considering this in this post. But, it’s important to understand that tactics are  personal to the trader. What works for me, may not work for you.

For, the first key distinction is the one made by Rande Howell: there is a difference between ’emotions’ and ‘feelings’; by the time you experience the latter, you are in the grip of the 3Fs. In this situation, I have to walk away from the stimulus – trading screen – , take time to bring my fears under control before returning to the fray.

Needless to say, if I have an open position, I’ll ensure I have a stop in place before ‘walking away’.

Happily, having to ‘walk away’ is now an infrequent occurrence. I found three tools invaluable:

  1. Preparation
  2. Early awareness of the emotion of 3Fs and
  3. Mindfulness Meditation.

More on this tomorrow.
